Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education-Northern Ireland

Established in 1991, the Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education is located in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Two of its largest campuses are the Gerald Moad Campus at Millfield and the College Square East Building Campus, both of which are located in Belfast.
The Institute has always been in the relentless process of improving its teaching standards.
Professors at the Institute constantly enhance their skills and know-how in the educational and industrial fields in order to consistently maintain the Institute's high ranking position among the top Institutes of the country and the world.
The Institute has approximately 40,000 students enrolled into its various programs making it one of the most prominent Institutes of the UK.




Courses Offered
Some of the Departments of the Institute that offer full time courses include the:

  • Department of Creative and Health Studies
  • Department of General Education
  • Department of Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism
  • Department of Technology
  • Department of Business and Management
  • Department of Computing and Administrative Studies

Courses are organised into different levels. Eligibility criteria for a particular course depend on the level that you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a BTEC First Diploma in Business (Level 2 Course), a course under the Department of Business and Management, your admission requirements would be that you should have studied Mathematics and English upto the GCSE level. On the other hand, if you are enrolling for a BTEC National Certificate in Business (a Level 3 Course), your admission requirements would be that you should possess at least one of the following:

  • Four GCSE passes at Grades A - C
  • A BTEC First Certificate / Diploma in any related subject
  • A GNVQ Intermediate Award
  • Any other equivalent qualification
Scholarship
All first year Higher Education students are usually sent letters notifying them to apply for the bursary of £2,000 for course fees.
To be considered for the bursary, you must ensure the following:
  • That you have filled in all the details in the Application Form
  • That you have approached the Education and Library Board for monetary aid regarding the Higher Education Program
  • That you have applied for a fee loan
  • That you have permitted the Students Loan Company to access information about your residual domestic income with a third party.
To be selected for the award, you must
  • give indication in writing that you have the motivation and dedication to effectively complete your Higher Education program
  • prove that you have participated in extra curricular activities such as social work, music, etc. in your school or community
  • explain the significance of the scholarship for your course completion, i.e. why you feel that you require the scholarship in lieu of a part time job to finish your studies efficiently.
Library and Learning Resource Centre

The Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education has a Library and Learning Resource Centre on each of its campuses. The Library houses myriads of books and journals. Access to the Internet is free of charge at the Learning Resource Centres. Some of the other amenities available to students at the Learning Resource Centres include:
  • the availability of e-learning facilities
  • the availability of online journals
  • the facilities of video watching
  • the provision of group study spaces
  • the provision of audio terminals
  • the provision of CD-ROMs

Student Facilities
Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education offers a range of counselling services to its students to ensure that they can concentrate on their studies without getting bogged down by other problems of life. Expert counsellors counsel students who are distressed due to personal, relationship, or academic related problems. To encourage students to develop a positive bent of mind, Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education offers a range of services in the form of Yoga therapy and Tai Chi to its students.

Accommodation
As the Institute has connections with local Universities, accommodation can be arranged for international students in these local Universities. It is paramount for international students to indicate their need for accommodation in the Accommodation Application Form after they have been selected for a course at the Institute and have received their visas. Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education arranges for students' accommodation in the following places:
